Overview
My Kampung Home is a dementia-friendly wayfinding system designed to help ageing communities in Singapore, winning 1st place in NYP x AWWA Hackathon.
It uses signages inspired by nostalgic childhood games to guide people with colour-coded directions around the neighbourhood.
Problem
- Elderly living with dementia struggle to find their way around their neighbourhood estate
- The current HDB blocks around AWWA have the same structure and colours, thus confusing to differentiate between them
- There also no signages in between key amenities and facilities within the estate.
How might we?
As a team, we brainstormed some "How might we?" statements to establish main goals for the project.

Design Rationale
When designing for individuals with dementia, the most important things are ensuring that the design is not visually overstimulating, and does not disrupt their daily lifestyle.
Our wayfinding system aims to incorporate the nostalgic factor of the Kampung games they used to play, along with easily understandable signage and indicators that guide them to key locations around the estate.
To tie all the elements together, a storybook has been made to introduce residents to the wayfinding system, while simultaneously reminding them of the kampung games they enjoyed in the past.
Kampung Theme
-
The majority of our target audience (people living in Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 Block 119 - 128 & the people living with dementia) are all are between 60 - 80 years old currently
-
They lived in the era of 1940-1970s where many of them lived in a Kampung
-
Games are a crucial part of the Kampung lifestyle
-
We will be able to trigger feelings of nostalgia
-
Encourage more interaction with others through the games they all played when they were young.
Colour Zones
The neighbourhood estate is segmented into three main zones, having three colours (red, green and blue) and traditional game motifs represent the different areas and purposes.

Traditional Game Motifs
Traditional Singaporean Kampung Game Motifs were used to signify each colour zone.
The red zone includes the AWWA Dementia Daycare Centre and Active Ageing Centre. The red zone is also represented by the red Gasing top, a Malay spinning top played in the 1980s.
The green zone has the AWWA Rehab and Day Care Centre and exercise facilities, so green was used as it is associated with growth and recovery. The green zone is represented by the traditional Five Stones game.
Lastly, the blue zone has eateries, shops and other amenities and services. The blue zone is represented by the Goli marble game.
In order to guide dementia elderly around the neighborhood, clear and distinct colour-coded signages with the traditional games are put up around the estate.

"My Kampung Story"
-
Help the residents get familiar with the wayfinding system
-
Trigger feelings of nostalgia
-
Remind them of the childhood games they used to play

Ties all elements of the system together

Activity Area
Near each key location in each zone, we plan to implement special activity areas for residents to gather and play traditional Kampung games, reliving old memories while connecting with the community in the neighbourhood.

Video Storyboard
We planned our video using a storyboard, user journey navigating through the estate, meeting up with others playing the traditional kampung games at the activity areas
The video will show the storyline of the storybook and how it helps them to remember the wayfinding signs / cues

Video Showcase
The video will show the storyline of the storybook and how it helps them to remember the wayfinding signs / cues, showing the overall wayfinding concept.
